Патриотизм, любовь к родине, неразрывно связаны с 5-й заповедью – возлюби отца и мать.

Отечество, отец и отчество – слова, в Русском языке, однокоренные. Это не случайно.

Прошу не путать патриотизм с национализмом.

Мы, Русские, вне зависимости от национальности, живущие за рубежом, интуитивно бережно сохранияем наши отчества.

Есть патротизм исходящий из 5-й заповеди и есть лже-патриотизм. Патриотизм – это когда я почитаю своего отца и мать, родину и поэтому с уважением отношусь и к родителям и родине других. Лже-патриотизм – это когда я подчеркнуто почитаю своих родителей и родину насмехаясь и неуважая, (припоминая плохое или даже ненавидя) родителей и родину других. Так-же и с женами и детьми.

Мы помним историю с ветхозаветным Хамом. Помним как поступил Хам рассказав ‘правду’ о своём отце. Помним и как поступили его братья Сим и Иафет – прикрыв наготу своего отца. Это, в равной мере, относится и к нашим родителям, детям, женам и мужьям, друзьям, родине. Каждый делает в этой жизни выбор: он ‘честный’ Хам или любящие и милостивые Сим и Иафет.

Я свой выбор сделал. Мне не больно а радостно если кто-то рядом говорит, что любит свою жену, детей, родителей, родину.

Истинно любящий и почитающий своих родителей, будет почитать и родителей других людей. Истинно любящий свою жену, будет уважать и жен других людей. Истинно любящий свою родину будет с уважением относиться к родине других людей.

Было бы странно слышать, что тот кто любит свою жену таким образом дискриминирует всех остальных женщин. Или если кто любит своих родителей, тот будет естественно не уважать родителей других людей.

Жена, выходящая замуж не предаёт своих родителей, называя папой и мамой родителей мужа по истинной любви к нему. Дети, с уважением почитающие родителей других детей, не предают своих родителей, а просто являются воспитанными любящими детьми.

Я Русский Православный священник – патриот своей родины России. Я люблю свою родину – Россию поэтому я свободно и спокойно живу в Америке и люблю эту страну. Я патриот России и люблю свою родину – поэтому я с любовью отношусь к Украине, Грузии, Белорусии и т.д.

Я научился любить любя свою родину, своих родителей, своих детей. Я люблю свою жену и мать, поэтому я с любовью отношусь к женщине. Я люблю своего сына, поэтому я с любовью отношусь к детям прихожан.

Я люблю Бога – поэтому я люблю Его творение.

В настоящем патриотизме – настоящая Любовь – любовь ко всему миру.

Patriotism and False Patriotism

Christian patriotism is rooted in the first and, consequently, the fifth commandments, that is, in loving God and honoring ones parents. Hence, the term – patriotism, from the word ‘pater’ meaning ‘father.’

The term ‘patriotism’ is not to be confused with ‘nationalism.’

Moreover, there is genuine Christian patriotism, as mentioned above, and false patriotism. 

Christian patriotism is when I honor my parents and their country; consequently, treating with highest respect parents and the country of my closed ones, of people around me.  

False patriotism is when I honor my parents and their country of origin as a form of dishonoring the parents and country of origin of people around me, of my closed ones. Same goes for family members, such as, spouses, children, etc.

Christians, as well as, all descendants of our forefather Abraham (Jewish and Muslim) remember the story of Old Testament Ham who opened the nakedness, the sin, of his father. We’ve also been shown the way of virtue of Ham brothers Shem and Japheth, who covered the nakedness of their father, respectfully covering his nakedness, his sin. Needless to say, the same goes for our families, friends and, if we are truly Christians, our enemies. Thus, we have to make the decision: are we ‘truthful Hams’ or merciful ‘Shem and Japheth.’ We know whom God blessed. 

We are given the fifth commandment regardless of the state of our parents. Whether they are naked or clothed, rich or poor, drinkers or sober, Holy or sinful… . If we are truly practicing Christians, same would apply to our family, as well as, any other families, homes and homelands. 

How genuine is our Christianity, in that respect, is easily checked by self-observation. Does it bother you when someone loves his country, parents, wife, children… unconditionally?  Would you stop fulfilling the fifth commandment if your father or mother was a drunkard or thief? How about if your neighbor’s parents were thieves? Are you going to act like Ham or like Shem and Japheth? Same applies to their homelands, countries. Are you Ham or Shem and Japheth? Are you a genuine Christian patriot or false patriot? 

Do you rejoice when someone speaks good about their parents, wife, husband, children, friends, neighbors? Or you take it as a personal offense? Does it bother you, when you see how someone is covering the nakedness, that is sins and/or shortcomings, of ones neighbor, children, parents, their homelands? 

One of the tools to discern whether a statement is true or false, is to move it to a familiar background/context to compare. For example: ‘If you love your country so much why don’t you go/move back there?’  let’s compare it to ‘if you love your parents so much why did you marry me and call my parents mom and dad?’ 

Christian patriotism is logical, it means: I, unconditionaly, learned to love my  parents and cover their nakedness; therefore, I will naturally continue to love and honor your parents, country, friends… your neighbors. 

When a husband marries his wife, and/or vice versa, they don’t betray their homes. If I love my wife, it doesn’t mean that I have to hate yours, otherwise,  my love is, somehow, not genuine. If I love my children, it means, I will respect and cover the nakedness of yours, unconditionally. Because, I am a Christian. 

Saint apostle Paul gave commandment to pray for authority of the countries  (1 Timothy 2:2) at the times when Christians were massively martyred by the same. Thus, if you are a genuine orthodox Christian – you will pray for the country you live in, and will never participate in any protests against authorities. We, being orthodox Christians, continually pray for the country we live in and it’s authorities, and will never participate in any form of revolution, because we remember the forefather of all revolutions – satan (Isaiah 14:12, Revelation 12:7-9, Luke 10:18, Jude 1:6, Ezekiel 28:16).

When someone tells you that he loves God and hates his neighbor, he is a lier (1 John 4:20). When someone tells you he is a patriot, but hates your country, he is lying to himself. A person that doesn’t love everybody – doesn’t love anybody (Matthew 5:44). We are to discern sin from the sinner. According to st. John of Kronstadt, we are never to combine sinner with the sin. You are either a Sun or a dark cloud. Can’t be both.  “Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?” (James 3:11).

Orthodox Christians are natural patriots. I love my parents, my homeland, my neighbor… unconditionally; therefore, I love yours, because I am an orthodox Christian patriot. 

I love God; therefore, I love His creation!

In genuine Christian patriotism – genuine Christian Love – Love towards God’s creation!
